STUDENTS TRAIN AT ARBORETUM |
County Parks Department and Orange/Ulster BOCES have partnered
to offer a School-to-Work program at the Orange County Arboretum.
Special education students have been selected by BOCES to participate
in this unique program offering educational knowledge of seasonal
operations in an arboretum including greenhouse experience,
propagation, planting, pruning, weeding, general garden care
and basic maintenance of a facility.
The students have successfully completed BOCES basic and pre-vocational
education program with skills and interest in participating
in the newly created off-campus-training program.
Job coaches work with the students under the direction of Parks
Horticulturist, Peter Patel, who assist the students with daily
work assignments.
The Arboretum School-to-Work program may well open career paths
for youths in horticulture.
